Registered bonds for the Eastern Railroad, 1867-1870.

Pursuant to St 1857, c 220, the state treasurer was authorized to issue scrip or certificates of debt to redeem scrip issued in 1837, 1838, and 1839 to aid in the construction of the Eastern Railroad (Coupon bonds for the Eastern Railroad, 1837-1867 ((M-Ar)1494X). Registered bonds, issued in 1867 to redeem those certificates per St 1867, c 255, were borrowed on the Massachusetts School Fund and various other sinking funds and were valued at $1,000 and $5,000. They were due in 1870 with interest paid at five percent per annum.

St 1890, c 428 enabled municipal officials or directors of railroad companies in Massachusetts to petition the Superior Court to abolish or alter railroad grade crossings; a court-appointed commission then made a decision to be confirmed by the court.
